SIX WOMEN SAILORS are to start the solo, around-the-world Vendee Globe 2020-21 on Sunday. As Pip Hare notes: "More men have walked on the moon than women have completed the Vendee Globe." These six skippers are the focus of our coverage – the stories of courage and daring they bring to a competition with each other and 27 male sailors.
“I have always joked that a Transatlantic is not enough for me.I have only just warmed up by the end. And running a marathon is never enough.”
Pip Hare brings grit to her adventures. Vendee Globe 2020-21 is the latest in a long line.
Consider her performance in an event that combines sailing, running, cycling and climbing–the Three Peaks Yacht Race along the wild West Coast of Wales. In 2017, Hare threw out all the rules in the for the Three Peaks race that includes:
Hare and her partner, Charles Hill, competed as the first-ever double-handed team. Most boats bring a crew of five –three sailors, plus two athletes for the land legs. Hare and Hill completed the land legs as a team, and crossed line in second place, finishing fifth overall, according to a report in sail-world.com.
But that’s not all. Hare broke an ankle in the race and still finished the event, according to a report in forbes.com. Without the injury, there’s no telling who could have won the event’s Tilman Cup, named for the British mountaineer and explorer.
